I have a 2002 C5 with Z51 pkg upgraded to 2008 ZO6 shocks. Also running 2008 Z06 wheels I got from a buddy with a lingenfelter. Yes they fit. Honest. No they don't stick out. No they don't rub but it is by a cats whisker on the inside.
Anyhow, 93K miles. My rear end sounds quite whiney under moderate acceleration. No noise at all when coasting or under hard acceleration. Tried a fluid change and moved to Royal Purple. That improved the noise by about 50%. Did not solve the problem. I am at a point where I have to make some decisions now.
The guys at Corvette Recyclers have a couple of rear ends to choose from, and I can just swap one in. The first rear has 35K on it but is from a 97-99. This gives a 3.42 ratio but it has the older style rear case which is missing some of the improved case structure from the later cars. I like the miles on it and the fluid was pristine. I fear going with the weaker case design. The other has a 3.15 ratio but is from a 2002 car. So it likely came from an auto, which I am guessing would probably be driven differently than a manual shifted one. It has about 56K miles on it. Still looked good from what I saw, but with the stock rear in mine which I think is a 3.42 it is already pretty dang tall. I am turning like 1700 RPM at 80 mph.
So do I bother with either of these, or do I find another one to swap? or do I just have the one in there rebuilt and maybe go with 3.73s?
Thoughts?
