I bought my '96 Silverado 1500/5 speed in May of '02. I bought it w/the plan of building credit, and then buying and '00 or newer 6.0L 2500HD/ 6 speed. The '96 had ~80k on the odo, and immediately impressed me with it's power, fuel economy and smooth ride. It got over 20 mpg hwy (peak of 22 on one road trip) and generally got ~14.5 mpg towing my boat to Powell and back.
In comparison, my friends' Dodge Dakota's (one 318/5 speed and one 4.7L/5 speed) both got ~19 hwy and 13 towing MY boat. Another friends RAM 1500 HEMI got ~15 hwy and 10-12 towing my boat. He now has a Jeep Cherokee HEMI that does about the same as the RAM. My truck would pull my boat up Parley's @80 mph; same as or better than any of the above vehicles.
[drinking the chevyaid on] ;D I went to Powell this weekend. Took my truck loaded w/crap for 5 days and 9 guys, and my boat. It's been 8 years and another 125,000 miles since I bought the truck. Still starts as soon as the starter hits the flywheel. I charged every hill as hard as ever, passed people as I pleased, and finished the trip by pulling Parley's at 80 mph (again), Trip average was 14.6 mpg.
205,2xx miles and the thing hasn't changed or aged one bit. Truck has taken: *one set of front pads, *an alternator, *a set of spark plugs, *1 set of tires, *one set of shocks *and a water pump. I love that sh!t. That cost to service ratio can't be beat by any brand or model, IMO.

I have had at least a half dozen 86-99 chevy trucks/suburbans over the years, starting with a 98 1/2 ton xtra cab vortec 5.7 very similar to yours. GREAT truck, wished I kept it ! The newer 2000-200x model years with the LS drivetrains are an even more refined version of a great truck, the older 86-95 TBI trucks, just a more basic version. Remind me alot of the old 68-72 Ford 3/4 ton trucks, virtually bulletproof ! Current inventory have a 87 3/4 ton suburb,99 3/4 ton suburb, and the 04 Escalade(fancy Tahoe) Each one is well worth the $$$ I have into them, and not needing them all,I am hard pressed to decide which one(s) to get rid of !

Update: Truck has 285,000 miles on it now and everything still works. Everything; AC blows cold, power everything...even power lumbar bladders still hold air. The seats aren't torn or worn where you slide in and out, the carpet is still good. Dash/gauges look nice still....doesn't burn any oil, still gets 20+ hwy, still starts the second the starter hits the flywheel. It's a killer truck.
