Good Morning all,
This morning on the way to work I looked down at my dash on the freeway (And we were only moving about 9 miles per hour...stupid traffic) and I see "sys" displayed on the dash where my dash would say what my adverage MPG was, or mile to empty or what not. I usually just turn that part of the dash off, and that is why it really caught my attention. I have not unpacked the box with my FSM in it, so does anyone know what this error is, and what the problem might be. It was intermittent on the way to work this morning.

That is the CCM/VATS/Security system. Basically, it's a "check engine light" for your BCM.
You can draw codes out of the system using a scan tool or by grounding terminal "G" (jump "A" and "G") on the ALDL connector. You can scroll through the various. "modes" or levels by using the DIC controls (mileage and engine buttons).
CCM is module 1 and ECM is module 4. Module # will display where the "SYS" is showing now, actual code will show where the speedo read out is. "C" codes (codes that start with "C") are CURRENT, and "H" codes are HISTORY.
When you jump the ALDL w/the Key on, it will scroll through any and all set codes through the various modes etc. Then finish with a "1.0" on the trip monitor and the speedo will show "---"

It is not in the Message center, but rather in the area next to my fuel guage. I can pull codes out of the Check engine light, in the message center, however this is not in that area. I have all mechanical guages. The only part of my dash that is digital is the fuel guage, the actual speed and then this area that is fuel mileage crap that really does not do anything. I have pulled codes on this car, and the flashing comes on the check engine light in the message center (Idiot light center)

I think that is a seat belt or air bag thing. it did it one time to me when my batt. got low. not enough power to drive it. you can look it up in my book if you want. i fixed it once with no trouble as I remember.

Good Chance that is what it is... I have a charging issue, and think my brand new alternator is junk.... got to take it back and exchange it.
I do have troubles with the Seatbelt thing anyway. It always has the fasten seatbelt light on, but my seatbelt is on... My thoughts were a grounding issue in the seatbelt thing, but have not gotten that far into it.

An alternator, bad grounds or bad battery will cause the SYS to flash, so those are good areas to check. If you do need to proceed w/an actual diagnostic process, the DIC IS your fuel/Speedo. -That's where you can get these codes from. Here are a couple pics to show you what I'm talking about... And here is how you manually scroll through the modes using the fuel/engine buttons:

Tom tonight I did some research on the Corvette Forum and what do you know I find that you were having a similar discussion with someone with a ZR-1. Funny that I read it and say to myself that I wonder if it has anything to do with my aftermarket stereo that has not worked since I bought the car (Acts like there is no power) and the fact that I had a couple of blown fuses, so I replaced the fuses and yes they have not blown again, but have to wonder if there is not a problem. Funny thing is that I have had a drain on the battery the last few weeks, and the alternator died. I replaced the alternator, and thought I had to replace that ultimata battery, but with a weekend on the charger things seemed to start again, and putting it on the Battery/Alternater tester I have, it was charging, but minimally. This weekend I plan on pulling the old stereo out of the dash, and make sure it is disconnected. I am going to be doing a full install of a system that is not going to be attached to the factory harness, with Warship's help with a couple of custom speaker enclosures. This weekend I will pull out the old, and later when all the parts are here, we can it together, but in the mean time, I want to get rid of some of these gremlins, and make sure that I can make it through the winter with no or very little work.
I think you are on to something with the aftermarket stereo, and electrial issues.
