So I took my '81 in yesterday to run safety and emissions, and failed both because apparently the previously owner took out the Catalytic Converters. I've done a little research, and it appears that it is the law to have them in.
Here's where things get sticky. When I was having my engine work done, the shop ran the emissions test and they said my car passed (unfortunately it was in a different county so it didn't count...). So, if my car passes emissions without Cats, do I still need them? I don't exactly have $300+ to spend right now... :/

I just moved here from California about a year ago, and have just had both my vehicles smoged here in Utah. I know in Cali you have to have them, and I am pretty sure that if they came on it stock you would have to have them here.
Might ask Highpockets on here, as he runs a shop down in Lehi. He might know for sure, and he might have a could or know of a place to get a deal on them.

Taylor,I am sorry to tell you but the car will fail visual for no cats so the fact that it smogs clean wont matter. You will have to have some(probably one unless car has been dualled out)before it will go through. 3 bills is probably what its going to take, sorry man !

My 77 has had the seats changed to 78's. Apparently they are more comfortble. Anyway, the drivers seat is an electric adjustable seat which is about 4 inches higher than the original. The problem is that I am 6'1" and have to scrunch down with the T top on and with the top off my head sticks up over the top. I was told that all I needed to do was change the seat track. Anybody know how to do that?

drpraetorius, not 100% sure but I think yours is a Red Corvette and you work in Draper? If that is you, I see you just about every morning. I have a Red C4, and I also drive a Silver Grey Suburban. Anyway, I could help you with this if you like. I live in Sandy, and work here in Draper. If you like shoot me a PM and I can help you either after work one day, or on the weekends just about any time. You would just need to have the other seat track and if the bolts line up, no issue. If they do not, we would know pretty fast, and there are other things we could do to make them work. Would need to be done on the seat end, and would need to make something, but I know that we could work something out. Either way shoot me a PM and we can see what we can do.

Just tack weld some cat covers onto the exhaust and it'll pass visual because it looks like cats are there. Umm, no I've never done that myself

haha dynomax bullet mufflers look amazingly similar to high flow catalytic converters as well i doubled them up and ran 2 bullets per pipe (4 total) 2 right off the headers that look just like Cats and 2 at the end of my pipes before they dump. never had a problem
