Is anyone here into Rifle target shooting? I'm interested in getting started maybe getting into some amateur competitions. Nothing to extreme but I'd like to do something bigger than a .22 but nothing too big.
Any advice?

I will politely decline that offer. That might get me some strange looks if I was a new shooter aiming at that for a target.

They might know... thanks i'll check around this weekend if i have time, i was just hoping to go in with a little knowledge to mask how clueless i am other than wanting to shoot at targets.

So you are thinking about benchrest shooting ? Or competitive offhand style/tactical shooting ? Do you want to make small holes in pieces of paper or test your skills at various targets/ranges/positions ? You can spend $3-4K on a firearm and nearly the same or more on PREMIUM optics. And,yes,I tend to go to extremes in everything I do,but my research has indicated that centerfire target weapons of upper quality(such that lack of good shots/groups) falls on the shoulders of the shooter rather than weapons. Oh,and we havent even touched on the subject of cartridges/spotting gear, shooting logs/diary,chronographs,breathing and what you had for dinner last night ! Let me know what you are thinking,I have a couple customers who are into this rather deep.

I don't think I want benchrest( I had to google exactly what that was). I'd like it to be more interactive more me involved. So I'd like a combo of thing so the "test your skills at various targets/ranges/positions" sounds good to me, but right now I've got no skills.
What I really want to be able to do is shoot and cut rope from x amount of yards away to free the guy hanging/balancing on a grave stone while i'm sitting on an unsteady horse using some primitive slot peep sight thing.
Is there a competition/event like that? Maybe there isn't any competition for what I want so in the end maybe I'll just be doing what I want.

Wow,now THAT is a new one Tony ! I love it,cut the rope from the dangling guy ! So more along the lines of practical shooting skills. What do you have to shoot right now ? Personally,I would start out with a nice target grade bolt 22 simply because it will allow you to master your technique as well as put LOTS of lead downrange for a small fee. Then perhaps graduate to a centerfire system ? Just an idea, your welcome to come out one weekend and shoot with me,I have a couple different platforms you could try.

Doesn't everyone want to shoot like Clint in the Good the Bad and The Ugly?
After a bit of reading you're not the only person recommending a 22 for a beginner. I have nothing to shoot right now so I'll be looking to pick something up on the cheap to get started. Then move up from there. Am I nuts to think I want lever action over a bolt action?

If your going to cut rope with one shot may I introduce you to the Barrett 50 cal. Cause that's what it is going to take. I saw a program on cable where they were trying to do exactly that. Good luck, tough thing to do with a small caliber in one shot.

So I think I've picked out the gun I want. Vince tell me if you'd steer me towards something else. A Henry Golden Boy 22 LR www.henryrepeating.com/rifle-goldenboy.cfmwith a Tang Sight if i can fine one for less that $200 (the sight that is).

I did target shooting with an Anschutz match rifle for quite a few years and in 22 it was great. If I were to do any distance shooting a Weatherby 300 Mag would be my choice of guns I have either owned or do own.
For pistol I still like my Colt Gold Cup National Match 45 ACP. But then again I do like old stuff.
Single shot pistol I would take a Thompson Contender if I could be allowed to change barrels for different shots. Only gun like it in the world that I know of.

I have a regular barrel Henry that I bought for my son to shoot. It is an excellent starter gun, reliable and accurate and I expect no less from the fancy model.Winchester made a nice one,a 9422 as well as Browning. You can easily mount a fixed 4X scope to it if you choose.
