We got into DSM's back in '01 and have been through probably 20+ in the last six years. I have a love/hate relationship with them. Love = cheap race cars. Hate = cheap pos's. I think we've tried to get "out" of DSM's about three times now. But we always seem to get back in and collect more. I currently took over the husbands '93 Talon and he's going to be racing the Vette next year. It's running a GT42 turbo, direct port, 2.3L stroker, AEM EMS, etc. Right now, it's a five speed manual. We're going to be converting to an auto over the winter. Why? Not because I can't drive a stick (it was the first 2g dsm, '95-'99, into the 11's and still the fastest 2g in the state of Utah, that all happened back in '04. I sold it a few years back) I was running mid 11's in my five speed '97 Talon. Just because there aren't many around and the thought of a consistant race car is kinda cool. Most of my time spent at the track in the past years has consisted of bracket racing. I'll keep this thread updated as we progress. I know, I know. Vette's and DSM's aren't much alike

My employee has a 91 Laser,2.0 Auto, and is considering converting to a manual FWD trans. Have you done this before ? How big of a hassle if we have a complete donor car ? Thanks !

Those cars are a dime a dozen. It's not worth the time to do the swap. Tell him to sign up for www.utdsm.org/smf/index.php I'm a mod on there. He can easily find a car to start with. I've got about four 1g (and a GVR4) parts cars right now (awd, fwd, auto and 5 speed). If he needs any parts, tell him to hit me up. I am getting low though and plan on scrapping the cars soon.

Yes, the following is crazy. They're cheap and plentful. They're also mostly owned by 16 year old kids. To prove that point . . . this is my current auto sig on UTDSM: "You might own a DSM if . . . You come to the $5 sale of DSM parts at K&A's house - and need to come back when you get $5." K&A = Kim (myself) and Adam (the hubby). ;D I've posted a lot of my build-ups on my blog and my web site.

Thats funny ! He was just looking for some parts for his, then trans started to die. Then he finds this 5sp car and thinks, cool,I will build it and keep mine. He is lost/hopeless. I feel bad for him but at least they are WAY cheaper than the vettes, hell I could have built 10 of them for what I have into my turbo vette !

Yup, there is a difference in the fwd and awd flywheels.
I have a stack of awd's if he's going that route.

HA HA ! I spoke too soon ! Parts sent wrong clutch asy so he used the old one he had from his parts car. Setup height must be different cuz in wont release, causing it to be VERY difficult to get into gear while stopped. Oh well,he is getting pretty quick at pulling the trans .

Actually, the clutch discs and pressure plates are the same for awd and fwd (but most part numbers are different for non-turbo and turbo, and he was going from non-turbo if I remember correctly?). Only difference in the clutch setups are the flywheels. Just a FYI for him later.
He should check his cable adjustment and there is a bracket that hold the cables on the tranny. That bracket is different in the '90 (If I remember correctly) and it causes issues with shifting on a '91 + setup.
Also, the slave and master cylinders in those cars go bad like there is no tomorrow, he might look into replacing them (I've had nothing but issues with AutoZone slaves) and also do a GOOD bleed.
Some folks talk about a slave extender rod online, but if your system working properly, that is a just a cover for something else wrong.
Yeah, if it's a problem on a DSM. I've seen it :-P
