Here is a sad tale, driving to the Village Inn to have coffee with Jim and my car just quits. I thought it might be the one and final short left over from the TAS days, but when Jim got to me and we were able to turn the motor over to check the blue and red lights in my distributor, I noticed that the rotor wasn't turning. Log story short, broken cam. I looks to be broken right at 7 & 8 cylinders. I called comp cams and they told me that there is a certain amount of breakage right at 7 & 8 caused by cores that have some problems, and design problems in the SBC. I called Vince and asked if there was any trick to removing the stub portion of the broken cam. He said yes, pull the engine. Imagine my heart felt graditude when he said that. He then clarified the statement. He said pull the engine, remove the freeze plug, pull the cam portion out, then, check the cam bearing for any problems. I want to thank Vince for taking the time out of his day to council and old man on how to fix the problem. Thanks Vince. Well the top of the engine is removed and we are getting ready to pull the engine. Ross will be by Friday evening and we will Jerk it out. I will have pictures in the morning of the work so far. I am going to change cams and ross and I are working on that. Jim spent the day and I am using his cherry picker, Strokers motor stand. (mine is at TAS and they won't give it back)

4th counting 2 for Ross. I am leaning strong to an Isky cam with the 4/7 swap. Just tell my ECU the new firing order as I have sequentail fuel injection, and switch the plug wires. Right now if nothing changes when I get it tore apart I am going with the Isky custom grind. (Sidenote, I will refresh the bearings while its apart.)

Wow sorry to hear about your cam.... That really sucks. If I were not moving, I would be there to help if you need it.
I agree with the Isky cam myself just because they would use a non chinese steel core....

ok, the cam is out, it busted right at the journal. Here is a photo.. The distributor gear looks like it has "zero wear". The bearing does need to be replaced, thanks Vince.......

Can you take a close up of the fractured surface using the closeup function (the little flower button) on the camera? Get as zoomed in as possible and get it as clear as possible and get lots of light or flash on it. Try to keep the camera very steady. I might be able to tell something just from a good picture. Take one straight on and one at about 45 degrees to the surface...

Take one straight on and one at about 45 degrees to the surface... Ross, I am such an idiot, but I cannot get a good photo. Here is the cam profile we have decided to use, we think that this gives me the torque where I most need it. The models show a 50 foot pound increase over the broke cam profile from 3000 to 5500, when I shift to 3rd and the rpm drops to around 3000 and this should give me the staying power. 238/238 duration, 600 lift, and 112 LSA, ground straight up. I want to spend some time on the phone with Crower on tue talking about thier cams, but at the moment I am still leaning to the Isky 4/7 swap custom grind cam. I am going to swap out all cam bearings as several have some good wear patterens on them, and the back bearing has some damage.

Save those parts. Sell one half to a turbo Buick guy, and the other half to a Harley owner! ;D

Ok, the cam is ordered, I have changed my mind on the grind and because it is so Powerful with many hours of design I cannot tell u what the grind is.. The engine is going to felts in the morning to have new cam bearings installed, and I will freshen up the rod and crank bearings with new ones.
